7.7 Becoming a Board Member
Most people would love to serve on a board of directors. Board members are compensated well, they are able to be engaged in real business decision making and serving on a board is rewarding, engaging and fun. However, people don't just go to school to prepare for board service. Rather, they become successful in their careers, usually developing needed expertise, and then are invited to serve on a board. There are executive search firms that companies hire to find the best and most capable board members. These firms specialize in identifying characteristics of good board members and work hard to maintain a wide range of personal contacts and networks. For individuals who want to eventually become corporate board members, the best strategy he or she can pursue is to become successful in the business world or in other endeavors, maintain a good network of contacts and associate themselves with organizations, such as the NACD, where they have an opportunity to meet and interact with other board members.
